Well known for their multi-award winning La Perfide vintage sparkling wines, it was Coates & Seely’s Rosé NV that really tickled my fancy during a recent lunchtime tasting.

Rosé wine forms 40% of the production at Coates & Seely, and this NV is a red grape only blend of 65% Pinot Noir and 35% Pinot Meunier. It is predominately made of the 2014 harvest with 10% reserve wine and a low dosage of 3.9 g/l.

The nose on this rosé was hugely appealing, with ripe red berry notes of strawberry and raspberry as well as suggestions of apricot.

To taste, it’s wonderfully ripe and succulent with red berry and stone fruit flavours. Pristine white peach notes, while still retaining a clean, bright acidity on the finish. A stunning rosé to pair with a plate of fresh native oysters.

WINE REVIEW

WINE OF THE MONTH: JANUARY 2018

It was a fantastic 2017 for Hampshire-based Coats & Seely, who scooped up a collection of trophies at the inaugural UK Wine Awards for their mature La Perfide Rosé & Blanc de Blancs. However, it was this Non-Vintage Rosé that really grabbed my attention more recently.

The Coates & Seely Rosé NV is a blend of 65% Pinot Noir and 35% Pinot Meunier, with 9g dosage.

This is a rosé that doesn’t sit back and rest on its laurels. The vibrancy of the acidity leaps across your tongue with grace and vigour, before a burst of red berry flavours takes centre stage.

The bubbles appeared surprisingly restrained in the glass, but persistent enough with a soft and supple mousse.

What impresses me most about this wine is the long, drawn out finish. Hints of citrus zest, red currant and raspberry linger.

A wonderfully fresh rosé for the new year!
