WINE REVIEW

First released last year, this Pinot Gris a recent addition to an ever-increasing lineup of premium ‘Vineyard Select’ wines from Denbies Wine Estate in Surrey. The wine was made from the 2014 harvest, grapes whole bunch pressed before full malolactic fermentation and 10 months ageing in old French Oak.

The wine has a pleasing light golden hue to match its rich nose of honeysuckle, apricot and melon, with hints of beeswax and toasted oak.

A firm dry acidity leads to a wine that is texturally hugely appealing; the slightly viscous and full texture marks the confident stamp of Litmus winemakers John Worontschak and Matthieu Elzinga. This texture is partnered with juicy notes of ripe apricot and peach.

The finish is punchy and precise – a mouth wateringly sharp lime acidity cuts through all of textures and lingers for quite some time.

Part of a new crop of serious and complex English white wines, The Vineyard Select Pinot Gris is of the most distinctive English varietal examples I’ve had.
