WINE REVIEW

Few English Sparkling wines have the same legacy and prestige as Nyetimber’s Tillington Single Vineyard. This year’s release, the 2010, is the second vintage of this super-premium English wine, and is a blend of 77% Pinot Noir and 23% Chardonnay. The bottle I’m tasting had spent just over 38 months on the lees, and was disgorged in August 2014.

The Tillington label from Nyetimber isn’t about power, potency or richness in my opinion; it’s about elegance, purity and finesse. As such, the 2010’s nose is delicately balanced. A burst of aromatic citrus that is more sherbet lemon than zest, then light biscuit notes – think freshly baked shortbread or sweet brioche. A rich fruit cloud of apple and pear aromas is seasoned with hints of raspberry and cranberry thanks to the Pinot Noir focussed blend.

This purity travels through to the palate, where all of those aromas come together to form a pronounced and integrated taste sensation. That tingling sherbet-like character entertains with racy acidity, with the mid taste taking a distinctly orchard fruit turn before the red berry flavours take hold, adding structure and strength.

The real beauty in this wine is the lengthy and refined finish, where clean mineral hues, citrus and subtle biscuit flavours linger effortlessly.

An exceptional wine that is well deserving of its status.
