It's that time of the year when bubbles in the garden as the sun sets becomes a regular thing.

I've popped a bottle of @extonparkvineyard Blanc de Noirs 2014. A delicious wine, and perhaps the most generous and rich in style of all of Exton Park's wines.

An engaging palate full of red apple, cranberry, almond croissant and a big burst of acidity with citrus and mineral textures. Lovely development, tiny fine bubbles. Another glass please!

When English wine meets beer.

What a treat to try a collab between Norfolk wine and beer producers @burnvalleyvineyard and @barshambrewery Their Bacchus Barrel IPA is a barrel-aged version Barsham's Golden Close IPA, using Burn Valley's Bacchus white wine barrels to impact vinous textures and aromatics with an oaky toastiness.

This is a great demonstration of local collaboration, with Barsham being just 7 miles down the road from the Burn Valley winery and vineyard. I look forward to more delicious collaborations from these two in the future.

A spontaneous cocktail made with @denbies_wine_est

A spontaneous cocktail made with @denbies_wine_estate recently released Artisan Small Batch Gin, which was made with pressings of their Orange Solaris. I also incorporated their delicious Orange Vermouth.

Combined with mandarin juice as well as a splash of bourbon for extra depth, this was an orange-fuelled delight.

1.5 shots Denbies Artisan Small Batch Gin
2 shots Denbies Orange Vermouth
2 shots mandarin juice
1 teaspoon muscovado sugar
splash of Bourbon (I used Maker's Mark that I had previously infused with spiced peach)

@extonparkvineyard Blanc de Blancs 2011

A personal favourites of mine, first sampled way back in May 2016. I believe this wine has been sitting under cork ever since its initial release.

Streams of tiny bubbles and golden hues showing its development, this wine gleams with green and baked apple, preserved lemon, intense minerality, nutty pastry and a touch of savoury complexity. There's this brilliant saline, oyster shell minerality that always takes me back to the slopes of the beautiful Hampshire vineyard.

I paired this with roast turbot and potatoes with a butter, caper and mustard sauce and a side of wilted spinach.

Superb pairing, helped by that wonderful energy that the Exton Park BdB always shows.

Celebrating International Women's Day with the two most important of all.

I'll also be raising glass to all the amazing women who are making a difference in English wine and the wine industry as a whole.

Today I'm officially declaring it as start of both the cook outside and #rosewine season.

Fired up the @ooni.uk pizza oven for the first time this year and while dough skills are certainly a bit rusty from the winter break, this evenings pizza went down well.

Also enjoyed a glass of @denbies_wine_estate Chalk Ridge Rosé, which is likely one of the lowest priced English wines out there. £8.99 mix 6 from @majesticwine, and perfectly partnered with home made pizza straight out the oven.

Tangy cranberry, wild raspberry and zesty lemon, with a touch of strawberry and meadow flowers, with an approachable low abv of 11%

Breaky Bottom Cuvée Koizumi Yakumo 2010

My experience with the brilliant Cuvée Koizumi Yakumo from @breaky has placed it consistently in my top 10 favourite sparkling wines of all time from anywhere. Moreover, it's made from 100% Seyval Blanc - a grape often derided, though in the right hands such as Peter Hall, and with a little patience, proves it can be truly sensational.

This wine is now some fifteen years old, with significant time both on lees and under cork (exact info not known). Its golden hue demonstrates maturity, while the nose has the immediacy of zesty lemon and green apple, supported by a croissant and caramelised pastry and a distinct chalkiness.

The palate has a wonderful citrus linearity that I recall this wine always having. Preserved lemon and lemon curd, as well as hints of baked apple and almond cream. There's this brilliant chalky, saline seam running through it, and just the right amount of nutty complexity to round things off nicely.

Brilliantly poised, superbly nuanced, this wine as as charismatic as its enigmatic winemaker.

Peter Hall, you are truly a master of your work. This is the finest Seyval Blanc that this land has ever seen.

Chapel Down Kit's Coty Chardonnay 2015

I last tasted this as part of an 8 vintage vertical tasting I organised nearly two years ago. While it was one of the lower-rated vintages (though the best of the odd-year vintages at that point), it was showing pretty well tonight in its tenth year of development.

Green apple and peach aromas, with hints of buttered toast and roasted nuts - all very appealing.

The palate definitely shows the greener side of the fruit, with green orchard fruit and rhubarb hints, but there's a more generous stone fruit richness than I picked up on last time.

There's a nervy, tense acidity throughout, but as this has continued to develop the wine has developed an endearing nutty complexity which adds appeal.

It also paired brilliantly with a quick pan-fried seabass on seared tomatoes, capers and sourdough croutons.

Revisiting the brilliant Maker's Rosé 2015 from @arteliumwine

A blend of 50% Pinot Noir, 30% Chardonnay and 20% Pinot Meunier, winemaking by Dermot Sugrue.

This was one of the first releases from Artelium and it impressed me right away with its bold colour, taut red berry flavours and deep complexities.

Some four years on since I first reviewed it, and sadly my final bottle, but this wine is still thrilling.

The palate bursts with tangy cranberry and raspberry, as well as grapefruir and blood orange flavours. Superb depth, with cherry and spiced fruitcake complexities.

When looking for the perfect English sparkling win

When looking for the perfect English sparkling wine to celebrate with for Chinese New Year, I opted for @hundredhillswine Rosé de Saignée 2021

The Rosé de Saignée is a particularly scarce release in the winemaker's portfolio, which is packed full of nuanced and commanding sparkling wine expressions. Made from Dijon 870 clone Pinot Noir grapes that was macerated for 8 hours, the resulting wine is a joyous vibrant red-hued journey.

I thought it perfect for Chinese New Year with its colour and indulgence, led by a surprisingly tense explosion of tangy cranberry and grapefruit. But it was the waves of cherry, raspberry and a touch of red plum richness that made it the perfect partner for Chinese roast duck and a cherry reduction sauce that echoed the wine's ripe fruit character.

Available in very limited quantities from Hundred Hills and @atlasfinewines

Craving the flavours of Italy after spending New Y

Craving the flavours of Italy after spending New Year's in Rome, I cooked up a quick spaghetti vongole.

From experience, English wines work really well with Italian flavours thanks to all that acidity and citrus energy. But one of my absolute favourites with seafood pasta is @dalwoodvineyard's White Blend.

A blend of Madeleine Angevine, Solaris and Seyval Blanc with a few years of bottle age, the 2021 beams with grapefruit, lemon and green apple freshness, then softer melon and pear notes and a lovely pebbles in salt water minerality. Superb length, too.

Overall such a brilliant wine, it's never let me down yet.

@wistonestate Rosé 2018

A blend of 80% Pinot Noir and 20% Pinot Meunier, this is a confidently coloured rosé with a concentrated nose and complex palate.

Concentrated cherry and ripe red apple apple flavours, with lemon, blood orange, deeper winter berry and pastry notes.

Delicious and a stand out rosé that never fails to impress.

A generous pour of @denbies_wine_estate Cubitt Bla

A generous pour of @denbies_wine_estate Cubitt Blanc de Noirs 2015 from magnum, which was delightful accompanying a pre Xmas feast of Chinese Hotpot and teppanyaki grill.

This 100% Pinot Noir BdN is a rich combination of cranberry, apricot flavours with delicious toasted brioche and almond complexity.

A big thank to Denbies for sending this over, it was a joy to revisit.

@nyetimber Tillington Single Vineyard 2016

Perhaps something of an atypical wine for Nyetimber, as its name would suggest Tillington Single Vineyard comes from a single site. Tillington in West Sussex is a site that is prized for its Pinot Noir, which forms the majority of the blend (73%), with the remaining 27% being Chardonnay, which also contrasts with the largely Chardonnay-dominant approach of Nyetimber sparkling wine blends.

Now in its fifth vintage, Tillington represents a rare single-site expression for Nyetimber, and immediately the red fruit dominance manifests on the nose with aromas of red apple, cranberry, layers of pastry and almond croissant.

On the palate the softness of the mousse is immediately noticeable; the bubbles are fine and supple but also persistent. There’s lots of red apple on the palate, with some more concentrated suggestions of stone fruit and bursts of red fruit. It’s the deeper nutty notes that add structure, something in between almond cream and marzipan.

What stands out about this wine is how refined it is. There are no rough edges, no jarring acidity, and it’s both not shouty nor austere – it’s perfectly refined, soft and confidently complex. This is a beautiful reminder of why Tillington has been my most frequent choice for a Christmas morning toast over the last ten years.

Who else is up for drinking Rosé by the fireplace

Who else is up for drinking Rosé by the fireplace this Christmas?

I’m a huge lover of riper style of rosés, such as those oaked, nuanced, textural styles that can be found in Rioja. Wines such as Viña Tondonia Rosado and the more accessible José Luis Ripa’s Ripa Rosado spring to mind, but what does all this have to do with English Wine?

Enter Artelium Artefact #8 ‘Skinny Gris’. It is it a dark rosé, or an orange wine, or perhaps a bit of both? Whatever it is, it is up there with the most textural and outstanding English rosé/orange wines I’ve ever had. It’s made from Pinot Gris, as the name suggests, and it was fermented on its skins.

If the striking colour doesn’t grab your attention, then the nose will! There are deep red fruit aromas of dried cranberry, cherry and ripe strawberry, with orange and lemon peel, potpourri and winter berry hints.

The palate is pleasingly taut, with redcurrant and cranberry flavours, together with a pithy citrus and black tea tannin. There’s ripe red apple in there too, and a brisk acidity running through it all.

Don’t serve this too cold – Skinny Gris can be enjoyed as a winter rosé in front of an open fire, paired with festive fare such as charcuterie or with a Boxing Day gammon joint.

I have been waiting patiently for the release of this superb Pinot from Flint Vineyard since previewing it earlier in the year.

The first of a duo of exciting new wines from Flint, this Pinot Noir was sourced from two sites: Flint Vineyard’s own in Norfolk and Martin’s Lane Vineyard in Essex. The grapes were crushed, destemmed and fermented on skins before being aged in new French oak for 16 months. The wine has aged a further six months in bottle before release.

With smoky black cherry on the nose, raspberry, red rose petal and forest floor, this is classic Pinot Noir with a pleasing nod to Burgundian elegance.

The palate is beautiful with a really concentrated ripe cherry as well as a savoury almost gamey meat richness. There’s a lovely silky warmth to this wine, with soft vanilla and toasted spices that make it incredibly moreish. A real triumph, this has got to be one of my favourites from Flint yet.

At a time when the price of quality English Pinot Noir escalating, i think this is a great buy at £34.99
