Craving the flavours of Italy after spending New Y

Craving the flavours of Italy after spending New Year's in Rome, I cooked up a quick spaghetti vongole.

From experience, English wines work really well with Italian flavours thanks to all that acidity and citrus energy. But one of my absolute favourites with seafood pasta is @dalwoodvineyard's White Blend.

A blend of Madeleine Angevine, Solaris and Seyval Blanc with a few years of bottle age, the 2021 beams with grapefruit, lemon and green apple freshness, then softer melon and pear notes and a lovely pebbles in salt water minerality. Superb length, too.

Overall such a brilliant wine, it's never let me down yet.

@wistonestate Rosé 2018

A blend of 80% Pinot Noir and 20% Pinot Meunier, this is a confidently coloured rosé with a concentrated nose and complex palate.

Concentrated cherry and ripe red apple apple flavours, with lemon, blood orange, deeper winter berry and pastry notes.

Delicious and a stand out rosé that never fails to impress.

A generous pour of @denbies_wine_estate Cubitt Bla

A generous pour of @denbies_wine_estate Cubitt Blanc de Noirs 2015 from magnum, which was delightful accompanying a pre Xmas feast of Chinese Hotpot and teppanyaki grill.

This 100% Pinot Noir BdN is a rich combination of cranberry, apricot flavours with delicious toasted brioche and almond complexity.

A big thank to Denbies for sending this over, it was a joy to revisit.

@nyetimber Tillington Single Vineyard 2016

Perhaps something of an atypical wine for Nyetimber, as its name would suggest Tillington Single Vineyard comes from a single site. Tillington in West Sussex is a site that is prized for its Pinot Noir, which forms the majority of the blend (73%), with the remaining 27% being Chardonnay, which also contrasts with the largely Chardonnay-dominant approach of Nyetimber sparkling wine blends.

Now in its fifth vintage, Tillington represents a rare single-site expression for Nyetimber, and immediately the red fruit dominance manifests on the nose with aromas of red apple, cranberry, layers of pastry and almond croissant.

On the palate the softness of the mousse is immediately noticeable; the bubbles are fine and supple but also persistent. There’s lots of red apple on the palate, with some more concentrated suggestions of stone fruit and bursts of red fruit. It’s the deeper nutty notes that add structure, something in between almond cream and marzipan.

What stands out about this wine is how refined it is. There are no rough edges, no jarring acidity, and it’s both not shouty nor austere – it’s perfectly refined, soft and confidently complex. This is a beautiful reminder of why Tillington has been my most frequent choice for a Christmas morning toast over the last ten years.

Who else is up for drinking Rosé by the fireplace this Christmas?

I’m a huge lover of riper style of rosés, such as those oaked, nuanced, textural styles that can be found in Rioja. Wines such as Viña Tondonia Rosado and the more accessible José Luis Ripa’s Ripa Rosado spring to mind, but what does all this have to do with English Wine?

Enter Artelium Artefact #8 ‘Skinny Gris’. It is it a dark rosé, or an orange wine, or perhaps a bit of both? Whatever it is, it is up there with the most textural and outstanding English rosé/orange wines I’ve ever had. It’s made from Pinot Gris, as the name suggests, and it was fermented on its skins.

If the striking colour doesn’t grab your attention, then the nose will! There are deep red fruit aromas of dried cranberry, cherry and ripe strawberry, with orange and lemon peel, potpourri and winter berry hints.

The palate is pleasingly taut, with redcurrant and cranberry flavours, together with a pithy citrus and black tea tannin. There’s ripe red apple in there too, and a brisk acidity running through it all.

Don’t serve this too cold – Skinny Gris can be enjoyed as a winter rosé in front of an open fire, paired with festive fare such as charcuterie or with a Boxing Day gammon joint.

I have been waiting patiently for the release of this superb Pinot from Flint Vineyard since previewing it earlier in the year.

The first of a duo of exciting new wines from Flint, this Pinot Noir was sourced from two sites: Flint Vineyard’s own in Norfolk and Martin’s Lane Vineyard in Essex. The grapes were crushed, destemmed and fermented on skins before being aged in new French oak for 16 months. The wine has aged a further six months in bottle before release.

With smoky black cherry on the nose, raspberry, red rose petal and forest floor, this is classic Pinot Noir with a pleasing nod to Burgundian elegance.

The palate is beautiful with a really concentrated ripe cherry as well as a savoury almost gamey meat richness. There’s a lovely silky warmth to this wine, with soft vanilla and toasted spices that make it incredibly moreish. A real triumph, this has got to be one of my favourites from Flint yet.

At a time when the price of quality English Pinot Noir escalating, i think this is a great buy at £34.99

Regular GBW readers will know that Flint Vineyard'

Regular GBW readers will know that Flint Vineyard's Silex is a particular favourite wine of mine. Ever since its launch with the 2018 vintage, its nuanced, complex and evolving approach has been enchanting.

The just-released 2023 vintage is a blend of 39% Chardonnay, 28% Pinot Blanc, 17% Pinot Gris and 16% Pinot Noir.

The palate was immediately pleasing with its soft, supple roundness that balanced bursts of lemon and tangerine. While not as concentrated as the warm 2022 vintage, this 2023 does a wonderful job at reenacting that wine's beautiful texture, nuance and delicacy.

Lees Age VS Cork Age

Last night I had the chance to sample @Wistonestate's latest Library Collection release; a late disgorged version of their Cuvée 2009, now with fourteen years on the lees and nearly a year under cork.

To contrast that, we also opened a bottle of Wiston's very first release, the 2008 Cuvée Brut. What made this bottle equally unique was that it has spent almost all of its life under cork. Having been released with just under three years on the lees, it's now spent thirteen years under cork.

This is striking and timeless. The nose on the 2009, for a 15-year-old English sparkling wine is still so incredibly bright. Lots of orchard fruit, yuzu lemon and lemon grass with the complexity of roasted almonds and hazelnuts.

On the palate, vibrant yuzu lemon, key lime pie and lemon curd up front. The acidity is bold and driving but then gives way to hazelnut, with richer buttery brioche and baklava notes emerging as it warms in the glass. This wine is brilliantly poised with nuance and nuttiness throughout, all the while delivering exceptionally bright citrus and green apple freshness. Superb

A really contrasting nose to the 2008, opening with more tertiary characters of honey, beeswax, and preserved lemon with a distinctive turmeric note and toasted rye bread.

Like the 09, the shows remarkable acidity with a citrus freshness as well as fine and pronounced bubbles. The fruit is much more tertiary, with burnt lemon, dried apricot notes and beeswax notes as well as a profound savoury depth and hints of dried mushroom. It's impressive just how well this first release has held up after thirteen years under cork!

The Late Release Edition 1 is an elevation of @eve

The Late Release Edition 1 is an elevation of @everflyht's signature Brut. The wine was fermented and aged between stainless steel, old Burgundy barrels and new French oak for 10 months before blending in August 2020. It has then been aged on lees for 44 months - the longest for an Everflyht wine to date.

The palate is expansive with a vinous depth that immediately pleases, together with red currant, dried strawberry and stone fruit flavours. Deeper toasted notes and a yeasty savoury edge continue to add further breadth, while the modest residual of 5.3g/l ensures the wine maintains tension and precision.

This is a brilliant wine, and could confidently sit alongside many of England's finest prestige cuvée releases; only this doesn't have the price tag, and is a relative steal at £38 a bottle.

Raising a glass of #englishsparkling to my mum tonight.

It would have been her Birthday today, and we enjoyed many a glass of sparkling wine together, including one of my own personal favourites the @nyetimber Blanc de Blancs.

It was mum's love for the finer things in life that led to me discovering sparkling wine and it being my drink of choice.

We miss you mum.

English Sauvignon Blanc? If it's as good as @woodc

English Sauvignon Blanc? If it's as good as @woodchestervalleyvineyard's - yes please!

I’ve always been impressed with Woodchester Valley’s still wines, particularly their whites, but even so this Sauvignon Blanc is a really pleasant surprise compared to many other examples I’ve tried. Harvested from just 2,000 vines from the steepest vineyard, Woodchester’s Sauvignon Blanc famously won a Master medal at the Global Sauvignon Blanc Masters 2022.

This begins with a brilliant, aromatic nose that’s full of grassy freshness with lime zest, gooseberry and tropical fruits.

The palate has a lovely crunch to it, lots of crisp green fruit and zingy lime, with touches of pungent tropical fruit. There are recognisable Sauvignon Blanc characteristics, but also a distinctive herbaceous edge and English hedgerow note, with a slightly smoky toasted lime grip on the finish.
