WINE REVIEW

Despite my familiarity with their excellent Rosé Brut, thanks to the IEWA competition, Chilcomb Valley’s Classic Cuvée has somehow flown under my radar.

This is a non-vintage blend of 2019 and 2020 fruit, half Chardonnay and half Pinot Noir, and has had four years to develop on the lees.

The nose has an immediately appealing mix of ripe red apple and stone fruit, with generous suggestions of warm brioche and toasted sourdough, as well as hints of red fruit.

The palate delivers on the delights that the nose promised, with a generous mixture of ripe red apple, peach and apricot flavours, cut through by crisp acidity and fine bubbles. There’s a lovely immediacy to this wine; it’s broadly appealing and commercially styled, but with enough complexity and development to make you want to return immediately for another glass.

This is superb value at just under £30 a bottle.
